1. Otani Hombyo Temple
Pass through the towering stone gateway to find a place of profound serenity, where the ashes of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Shin Buddhism, are enshrined. Visitors cross the elegant arched Spectacles Bridge over a lotus pond before entering the ornate wooden halls, offering a quiet moment of reflection before the ascent toward the bustling hills of Higashiyama.
2. Otani Cemetery

From Otani temple, stroll through the cemetery on your way to the next stop. It’s a huge site that seems to sprawl from the edge of the city to the woods. It’s an interesting place to stroll through as you’ll suddenly feel completely removed from the hustle and bustle of the city.
3. Kiyomizu-dera



Kiyomizu-dera is an old buddhist temple built on a lattice of wooden stilts. The temple is on the edge of the city, nestled into the edge of the forest with stunning backdrop of trees. In spring you might find the temple surrounded by pink blossom trees or crisp orange leaves in Autumn. Whatever the season, it’s well worth a visit! There are a few other pagodas in the grounds and various view points so have a good wander around. Kiyomizu-dera is one of several historic monuments in Kyoto with UNESCO World Heritage status.
4. Sannenzaka

Descend the iconic stone steps of Sannenzaka, where the atmosphere of old Kyoto comes alive among beautifully preserved wooden tea houses and traditional merchant shops.
5. Ninenzaka
Step back in time as you wander this beautifully preserved stone-paved slope. Here traditional wooden machiya houses and atmospheric teahouses capture the essence of old-world Kyoto. Keep an eye out for the world’s first tatami-style Starbucks. It’s tucked discreetly behind a classic wooden facade, as you soak in the timeless charm of this historic merchant district.
6. Yasaka Pagoda

Rising majestically above the sloping stone streets, this iconic five-story pagoda serves as the unmistakable silhouette of old Kyoto. As you approach the towering timber structure of Hokan-ji Temple, you’ll capture the city’s most quintessential view. Ancient Buddhist architecture perfectly frames the bustling merchant shops of the Higashiyama District.
7. Maruyama Park
After navigating the cobblestone slopes of Higashiyama, find your breath among the manicured ponds and weeping cherry trees of Kyoto’s oldest public park. This sprawling oasis offers a serene moment of rest. The park is centered around its iconic “Gion Shidarezakura” tree which serves as a majestic sentinel for weary travellers.
8. Yasaka Shrine

Famous for the vibrant Gion Matsuri festival, this bustling sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to see locals offering prayers for prosperity and beauty amidst a sea of striking orange architecture.
9. Hanamikoji-dori

Step into the timeless heart of Gion as you stroll down this historic, lantern-lit boulevard lined with preserved wooden machiya townhouses.
10. Minamiza Theatre
Marvel at the striking gables and peach-colored facade of Japan’s oldest kabuki theatre. A landmark that has anchored Kyoto’s entertainment scene since the 17th century. Located at the edge of the Gion district, its ornate architecture serves as a grand gateway to the world of traditional performing arts. Peer at the colorful posters showcasing seasonal drama festivals before crossing the bridge toward the bustling riverside.
11. Pontocho
Wander into this narrow, atmospheric alley where glowing red lanterns illuminate a hidden world of traditional wooden machiya houses and exclusive teahouses. This is a great spot to find a restaurant for dinner overlooking the river.
12. Nishiki Market

End your journey at Kyoto’s Kitchen, a vibrant, narrow arcade where the air is thick with the aromas of soy-glazed dango and fresh seafood. Navigate the lively crowds to discover seasonal delicacies, colourful snacks, and artisanal cookware tucked beneath a historic stained-glass canopy. It is the perfect place to toast to your travels with a local craft beer or a sampling of world-class street food.
More Things to do in Kyoto
This walking tour covers just a snapshot of Kyoto specifically the Gion District but there is plenty more to explore beyond this area! I highly recommend visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha to see the hundreds of red torii gates. Head to Arashiyama for bamboo forests and out to Kibune for serene onsens.
