Day Trip to Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow mountain is so called due to the colourful streaks that naturally occur in the rocks. It’s local name is Vinicunca. The mountain is predominantly red due to iron in the clay. Lines of green, brown and yellow can also be seen due to the different mineral compositions of the rocks. Next to Rainbow Mountain, you’ll find the much less busy Red Valley which is also well worth a look!

You can easily visit Rainbow Mountain on a tour from Cusco. Some tours start early – around 3am – to beat the crowds. But you can always snooze on the bus and breakfast is usually included! Vinicunca may well be the highest point on your trip at over 5,000 metres so make sure you’ve spent a few days in Cusco or other high altitude places before booking this trip.

Ollantaytambo has been inhabited for hundreds of years and has plenty of Incan ruins to show for it. The main ruins named after the town were once the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti. You’ll also see Incan terraces and hillside storehouses here.
